COTTON (Cotton, Cottonius) John (John of Afligemsky, Johannes Affligemensis) - music. theorist con. 11 - beg. 12 centuries Nationality is not established. It is believed that K. was a pupil of Fulgenius (1089-1121), who worked in the monastery of Afligem, near Brussels. K. is attributed to lat. a treatise on music in the form of letters to Fulgenius - “Epistolae ad Fulgentium”; consists of 27 chapters, contains a description of 8 cf. church. frets, information about the development of polyphony from the organum to the treble, about solimization; sets out the theory of intervals, division of the monochord, considers the decomp. notation systems; there are references to Plato, Boethius, Guido d'Arezzo, the theory of which he partially reproduces, and others. The treatise is didactic. character. First published by M.
