EZHEK (Jezek) Yaroslav (25 IX 1906, Prague -1 I 1942, New York) - Czech. composer and pianist. He studied composition with K. B. Jirak (1924-27) and J. Suk (1927-29), playing the fp. - at A. Shima (1925-30) in Prague; in 1928-38 muses. hand., conductor and pianist of the Liberated Theater in Prague, to 20 plays of which he composed music. Since 1939 he worked in New York, taught fp. game, was the leader of the Czechoslovak. choir at the Workhouse. In symph. poem (1936), concerts for fp. with an orchestra (1927) and for violin with spirit. Orchestra (1930), in strings. quartet (1932) and quintet for winds (1931), as well as in instr. the plays are noticeably influenced by the composers of The Six and I.F. Stravinsky; in music for dramas. theater and motion pictures used muses-express. means of jazz, rhythm intonation Czech. urban, as well as Latin-Amer. folklore. E. - one of the creators of Czech. mass, including politic.,songs (some of his songs have gained great popularity, including the “March of Optimists” and “The World Belongs to Us”).
