SCHULGOFF (Schulhoff) Julius (2 VIII 1825, Prague - 13 III 1898, Berlin) - Czech. pianist and composer. He studied under Z. Kish, I. Tedesco (fp.) And V. Ya. Tomashek (music-theoretical subjects) in Prague. He made his debut as a pianist in Dresden (1842/43 season), then performed in Paris, where he met F. Chopin, who praised his play and music, and in 1843 in Leipzig (in Gewandhaus). From 1845 he lived in Paris. One of the first published productions. Sh. - "Brilliant Allegro", ded. Chopin (1845). He performed in France and Austria (1849-50), Great Britain, Spain (1851), in Poland and USA (1853; in Ukraine, in Crimea). He taught fp in Paris. the game (1853-70), worked in Dresden (from 1870), later in Berlin (from 1888, from 1897 professor). A virtuoso pianist, S. wrote approx. 60 pieces for fp. in the salon style - 2 sonatas, a ballad (published in USA by P. I. Jurgenson), 12 studies, 3 nocturnes,impromptu, caprices on hung. themes, dances, including Mazurka “Poland” and “Memories of Warsaw and Kiev” (“Souvenir de Varsovie et Kiew”), he also owns fp. transcription czech.
