Carolina's parents have long been separated: her mother traveled to Europe, her father spent time in silence of his Ukrainian estates. Their daughter was raised in a firm Catholic faith and received a decent education. In 1836, she married the descendant of an ancient Germanic family, Nikolai Petrovich Wittgenstein (1812–1864), the youngest son of the hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, field marshal and His Grace Prince Ludwig Adolf Peter (Peter Khristianovich) tsu Sain-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (zu Sayn-Witt Berleburg; 1769–1843).
