Elvis was not the only representative of his generation who was interested in the nascent Negro pop music. But he alone, or almost alone, gave vent to his passion and even tried to meet with these musicians. Memphis has long been the crucible of singers who have emerged from the world of poverty on plantations in the Mississippi and other states. At the turn of the fifties, with an increase in migration flows, a crowd of talented musicians poured into the streets of the city and into clubs on Bill Street, grabbing at the first opportunity to present their version of the southern blues.
