Frederick Augustus II (1797–1854) - King of Saxony (1836) from the Albertine line of the Vettin dynasty; son of Prince Maximilian. In 1830 he stood at the head of a commission to suppress revolutionary unrest in Saxony. He took the throne after the death of his childless uncle, King Anton I, and his father's denial of the right to the crown. Wagner, who was sympathetic to this monarch, wrote in his honor the overture "Frederick and Freedom" (1830), and in the summer of 1844, on his return from England, he composed the "Welcome Song", which was performed in front of him by 120 musicians and three hundred singers.
