Serov responded with an article entitled Ulybyshev vs. Beethoven, published in 1857 in Noah Zeitshrift Für Müsik and provoked a stormy response in Germany. It was precisely Liszt who reacted to it with his Critique of Criticism, published in the same journal in early 1858. In the dispute between Ulybyshev and Serov, he naturally sided with the latter. Just then List wrote to Stasov that "Ulybyshev does not understand Beethoven and does not know him."
