This feeling, close to the feeling of shame, was especially clearly felt in the mid-eighties. Beale Street, located a few cable rooms from the Peabody Hotel (it is said that its hall is located on the delta itself), was just a long series of house skeletons, all overgrown with weeds and awaiting demolition. Where the heart of black America used to beat, the memories barely fade in an atmosphere similar to the movie "Mad Max": it is hopelessly empty here during the day and crack merchants scurry around at night. Only after the election of the first African American mayor at the beginning of the next decade, Memphis will recognize its cultural past and revive Beale Street from the ashes.
