At home, in Los Angeles, even great bands like Guns found themselves embroiled in a grueling race. Sunset Boulevard was still run by Motley Criie, but Poison quickly contracted and started working on the album. New bands like Jet Boy, Faster Pussycat and Shark Island joined together and fought for the same gigs in the same clubs. The question came up: can a hard rock band survive - no matter how talented - when the Big Four Trash are on the agenda: Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer? Even Axl Rose loved to listen to Fade to Black Metallica before bedtime, usually at dawn. He later said that this song about suicide and the forgiveness of sins gave him hope that the next day would be better than he had experienced. (Metallica members once admittedthat “Fade to Black” is actually talking about the theft of the band’s apparatus, but that’s not the point.)
