Free DownloadThat summer, 24-year-old singer Amalia Zebald visited Teplice. Her father was a justice adviser in Berlin, but the family was very musical: both the girl’s mother, Wilhelmina Zebald, and Augusta’s younger sister were members of the Berlin Singing Academy. One of his contemporaries described Augusta’s voice as “pure, like a bell, soprano,” and Amalia’s voice as “a sonorous and silver contralto.” A flirtation began between Beethoven and Amalia, reflected in a humorous greeting sent to her in writing through Tidge (“Amalia is a hot kiss when no one sees us”). These feelings were in no way passionate, and they simply would not have time to ripen in August 1811, as Amalia left Teplitz only a few days after meeting Beethoven. A year later, they met again there, but ... then the situation was completely different, and the continuation of the novel came across such internal obstacles with which Amalia was unable to do anything.
