The crowns of the 1820s were clearly incapable of rebellion; they only recently returned to peaceful life after the military upheavals, and the word “revolution” instilled in them instinctive fear or deliberate disgust. However, as is evident from historical documents and literary works of the time, dissatisfaction with the emperor’s extremely conservative policies, the harshness of the police regime, the imposition of official clericalism and the censorship arbitrariness was very wide and covered all classes, from enlightened noblemen to small servants, students and representatives of the artistic world.
