ARENSKY Anton (Anthony) Stepanovich [30 VI (12 VII) 1861, Novgorod - 12 (25) II 1906, Perkjärvi, near Terioka, now Zelenogorsk, Leningrad Region] - Russian composer, pianist, conductor, teacher. The son of a doctor. He studied in St. Petersburg at the private music school of Rousseau (under K. K. Zikke). In 1882 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the composition class of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. From the same year he taught in Moscow. conservatories (general musical and theoretical subjects, in 1889-94 special theoretical disciplines and a free essay class; since 1889 a professor). His students: S. V. Rachmaninov, G. E. Konus, A. N. Koreshchenko, A. B. Goldenweiser and others. In 1888-95 he directed the concerts of Rus. the choir. society. In 1895-1901 he was the managing director of St. Petersburg. Attrib. chorister chapels. Since 1901 he was engaged in composing and performing activities (he performed in Russia and abroad as a pianist and conductor).
