Kuyawyak (kujawiak) - Polish people. dance. Name received from the Kuyavia region. Consists of 3 parts. The first part is a polonaise, then K. itself and a wrap, or “small masur”. K. is a dance related to the mazurka, but, unlike the mazurka, it observes strict symmetry of accents. The characteristic form for K. is the period of two phrases, with the emphasis in the second phrase falling at the same places as in the first. Usually in K., the emphasis falls on one or another part of the 4th measure. Characteristic melodic. and rhythm. turns were used by F. Chopin (especially in mazurkas), G. Venyavsky and others.
