COTILLON (French cotillon) - French ballroom dance. origin, close to the counter-dance. Known since the 18th century. Received special distribution in ser. 19 centuryin European countries, including in USA. Muses K. was often based on popular dances (waltz, mazurka, polka). Performed by all participants at the end of the ball. K.'s diversity depended on the leading couple, led by a conductor-cavalier, who gave a signal to the orchestra to change dances, loudly called figures, and monitored the coordination of movements of the pairs. Since the 70s. 19 century the dance began to include elements of games, often with certain objects, accessories specially made for the ball (shawls, badges, etc.).
