SULZER (Sulzer) Zalomon (30 III 1804, Hohenems, Vorarlberg - 18 I 1890, Vienna) - composer and singer (baritone). From the age of 13 he was cantor of the synagogue in Hohenems; in 1825-31 chap. cantor heb. community in Vienna, from 1845-48 professor of singing at the Vienna Conservatory. Seeking to transform the antiquity. tradition of synagogue music in the spirit of Viennese classics, Z. organized at the synagogue in Vienna a choir with which he performed his own. arr. ancient heb. religion tunes, cult compositions. Z. published comp. Heb. liturgical chants ("Shir Zion", t. 1-2, 1845-1868), religion. hymns, arr. ancient cult tunes that are widespread. F. Schubert wrote for Z. “Psalm 92nd, Saturday Song”, for baritone and mixed choir; in Heb. cult text, 1828). F. Liszt in the book. "Gypsies in music" devoted enthusiastic pages to Z.'s singing and his compositions.
