TETRALOGY (Greek tetralogia, from tetra-, in complex words - four and logos - word, story, narration) - four dramas connected by a common idea, a single purpose. The concept arose in other Greek. dramaturgy, where T. usually included three tragedies and one satire drama (eg, a trilogy of 3 tragedies of Oresteia and the lost satire drama Proteus by Aeschylus). The most striking example of T. in music is Wagner’s grandiose opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, first staged in 1876 in Bayreuth for the first time. R. Wagner himself, however, called his cycle a trilogy, because he contrasted the shorter (without intermission) “Rhine Gold” to the rest of the parts as an opera-prologue. The concept of "T." is used in music preim. to the musical stage productionand does not apply to cycles of 4 prod. other genres (for example, the cycle of concerts "Seasons" by A. Vivaldi). G.V.
