People's Artist of the USSR (1939). In 1903 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in singing S. I. Gabel. Tsereteli (Petersburg), in 1907-08 - the Kiev Opera House, in 1909-1948 - the Mariinsky Theater (now Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after Kirov). In 1913-14 he took part in the "Russian Seasons" organized by S. P. Diaghilev (London and Paris).
