JALAS (Jalas; present fam. - Blomstedt, Blomstedt) Armas Jussi Veikko (b. 23 VI 1908, Jyväskylä) - Finnish conductor and pianist. He studied at the Conservatory and University in Helsinki with E. Melartin (composition), in 1933-34 he improved with V. Paul (fp.), P. Monteux and Rene-Baton (conducting) in Paris. Since 1945 he taught conducting at the Music Academy. J. Sibelius (professor since 1965), worked as a pianist and accompanist. Conducted by Fin orchestras. nat.Theater (1930-45), then the Finnish Opera (in 1958-1973 the chief conductor). He toured as a pianist and conductor (performed mainly by Sibelius) in Europe, as well as in the USA (1950, 1955) and Japan, and performed in the USSR. The author of the symph. and fp. Op .; he owns the fin processing. Narmelodies. Translated to fin. langa number of opera librettos, including "Katerina Izmailova." He wrote a book about the symphonies of Sibelius (with S. Gray).
