MAK-KORMAK (McCormack) John (14 VI 1884, Athlone, Ireland - 16 IX 1945, near Dublin) - Irl. singer (tenor). In 1903-04 he took lessons from organist and choirmaster V.O. Bryan. In 1905-07 he cultivated with R. Sabbatini in Milan, where he performed on the opera stage. In 1907 he made his debut as a conc. a singer in Queens Hall (London) and in the same year for the first time sang on the stage of Covent Garden. In 1909-14 he toured in theaters of different countries. Since 1914 he acted preim. like conc. executor. In 1930 left the scene. For M.-K. subtle sense of style and sophisticated technique, impeccable phrasing are characteristic. He performed most successfully in the operas of V. A. Mozart (Don Ottavio - “Don Giovanni”) and J. Puccini (Cavaradossi; Rudolph - “Bohemia”; Pinkerton). In chamber performance, he combined the features of the Italian Belcanto and the German song style.Known as an interpreter of Irish folk songs.
