CAFFARELLI [Caffarelli, Caffarello, Caffarellino, present. name and fam. - Gaetano Majorano (Majorano)] (12 IV 1710, Bitonto, near Bari - 31 I 1783, Naples) - Italian castrate singer. He studied singing with P. Kafaro (in whose honor he took the pseudonym), then with N. Porpora in Naples. In 1726 he made his debut on the opera stage in the female party (Alvida in the opera "Valdemaro" Sarro, theater "Balle", Rome). Sang in the decomp. theaters of Italy. In 1738 he performed in London (in the operas of G. F. Handel “Faramondo”, “Alexander”, “Xerxes”). He toured with great success in Madrid, Vienna, Paris. He performed leading parts in the operas of B. Galuppi, J. Pergolesi, L. Leo and other composers. In 1755 he left the opera stage.
