DASSIN (Dassin) Joe (real name - Joseph Ira, French - Jo, Joseph) (5 XI 1938, New York - 21 VIII 1980, Papeete, Father Tahiti) - French singer-songwriter and composer. Son of the french. film director Jules D. and violinists B. Loner (grandfather D. is a native of USA, who emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century). In the 50s. D. with his family left the United States, lived in a number of countries, then settled in France. He graduated from the University of Michigan as an ethnologist. He studied Amer. and Native American folklore (the intonations of Amer. and Native American folk music formed the basis of many of his songs).
