KOCHALSKY (Koczalski) Raul (3 I 1884, Warsaw - 24 XI 1948, Poznan) - Polish pianist and composer. He studied the game of fp. at mother. Debuted at the age of 4. He studied with L. Marek (student of F. Liszt) and K. Mikuli (student of F. Chopin) in Lviv. Since 1892 he toured in different countries, including repeatedly in USA (until 1896 gave about 1000 concerts). He took lessons from A.G. Rubinstein. From childhood, he was distinguished not only by virtuosity, but also by the depth of interpretations of Op. classics, vivid emotionality performed by romantics. Later gained fame as an interpreter op. Chopin. Art K. was distinguished by improvisational freedom, poetry, sophistication of sound. He lived in France, Germany, Sweden, after 1945 - in Poland. He taught the game in fp. in the state. Higher School of Music in Poznan (1946-48) and Warsaw (1948). In Op. K. tangible influence of Liszt;the most significant are virtuoso pieces for fp. (c. 70).
