MERRIAM (Merriam) Alan Parkhurst (b. I XI 1923, Missoula, pc. Montana) - Amer. musesscholar and folklorist. He studied at the State. University of Montana, then in Northwest. University of Evanston (1947-51). He taught at the same universities and in Minnesota (1953-69; intermittently). Specialized in the study of afr. music and jazz. In con. 1950s undertook a number of folklore expeditions to African countries (Rwanda-Urundi, Zaire), collaborated in scientific. and other cultural commissions working in Africa, participated in the international. congresses of Africanists in Accra (1962) and Dakar (1967), published in the United States.
