Has toured in many places. countries of the world, including in the USSR (1934-35). Like conc. the singer made her debut in 1925 as an opera in 1955 in the part of Ulrika (Masquerade Ball) on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York (the first performance of a black woman in the history of this theater). A. is one of the largest chamber singers of our time. Her voice is exceptional in the breadth of the range, the beauty of the timbre and the saturation (“a voice that occurs once every hundred years,” according to A. Toscanini). Its performance is characterized by depth of feelings, penetration and subtle musicality. In the repertoire decomp. character and style - I. S. Bach, L. Beethoven, F. Schubert, R. Schumann, G. Mahler, P. I. Tchaikovsky, as well as J. Gershwin and spiritual.
