SOKOLOV Nikolay Alexandrovich [14 (26) III 1859, Petersburg - 27 III 1922, Petrograd] - USA composer, teacher, music. theorist. In 1885 he graduated from St. Petersburg. the conservatory in the class of composition with N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov (also studied with Yu. Johansen). In 1886-1921 he taught in regency classes Pridv. chorister chapels, in 1896-1922 - in St. Petersburg. (Petrogr.) Conservatory (since 1908 professor). Since the 80s S. was one of the prominent representatives of the Belyaevsky circle. That means. a place in his work is occupied by romances. They reflect the process of evolution of S. - from the populist moods of its first productions. (in the words of I.S. Nikitin) to an elegant, sometimes refined, but shallow lyricism of later ones. From chamber compositions, 2 strings stand out. trio. S. belongs to the work "Fundamentals of Polyphony" (manuscript; stored in the manuscript department of LOLGK), as well as manuals on harmony and counterpoint.
