DIABELLI (Diabelli) Anton (6 IX 1781, Matse, near Salzburg -7 IV 1858, Vienna), Aust. music publisher and composer. In childhood - a boy choir in the Michaelbeuern monastery and in the chapel of the Salzburg Cathedral, a student of M. Haydn in composition. He taught the game of fp in Vienna. and the guitar. In 1824, together with P. Cappi, he opened the muses. Publishing House (Diabelli & Co) publishing op. F. Schubert, J. Lanner, I. Strauss, C. Czerny. In 1852 the publishing house was sold to K. Shpin. As a publisher, D. was associated with L. Beethoven. At his insistent request, Beethoven wrote 33 variations on the waltz D. op. 120 C-dur (1823) for published sobr. musesproduction D. under the name. "Vaterländischer Knstlerverein". D. - author of mass, cantatas, chamber. instr. music, songs, but only his instrumental pieces for fp. and guitars (sonatins, sketches, sonatas in four hands) retained their significance. Sometimes his "Pastoral Mass" is performed (1830).
