MONODRAMA (from Greek monos - one and drama - drama, action) - dram. production for one actor. M. was essentially still pre-Aeschylus Greek. tragedy (Fespid, Frinich), where one actor, changing masks and costumes, depicted decomp. characters. M. in music - music. a work performed by one actor, accompanied by an orchestra or instrur. ensemble, sometimes with the participation of the choir and even ballet. M. as a genre in Europe was formed in ser. 18 century in the works of J.J. Russo (Pygmalion, 1770). Further development of the genre is marked by a rapprochement with the opera. The lead part in M. is either melodious recitation (more often) or a melodized recitative. In the 19-20 centuries. from production of this genre stand out: “Lelio, or the Return to Life” by Berlioz (for the reader and choir, speaking at the forefront, soloists and symphonic orchestra hidden behind the curtain, 1831), the opera “Waiting” by Schoenberg (op. 17, 1909) ,“The Human Voice” by Pulenok (1958), “Notes of a Madman” by Butsko (1965).
