MERICANTO (Merikanto) Appe (29 VI 1893, Helsinki - 28 IX 1958, ibid.) - Finnish composer and teacher. Oscar's son M. Studied under S. Krel and M. Reger at the Leipzig Conservatory (1912-14) and at S.N. Vasilenko in Washington (1916-17). From 1937 he taught music theory at the Helsinki Conservatory (since 1939 the Sibelius Academy of Music), where he later headed the composition department (professor since 1951). As a composer formed under the influence of him. neoclassicism (Ch. arr. op. Reger), partly A. N. Scriabin. Wrote preim. production large form; it is characterized by a tendency to tart harmony, timbre colorfulness, the use of linear polyphony. Mfr. M. are saturated with imagery associated with nat. poetry, but do not have a detailed program (symphonic poems “Pan”, “Lemminkäinen”, “The Abduction of Külliki”, etc.). Music M. was underestimated by contemporaries (opera "Juha" post.only 40 years after its creation). The most significant instr. concerts (especially a concert for 9 instruments), as well as the 3rd Symphony (1953), characterized by transparency and clarity of the orc. letters.
