COFFLER (Koffler) Jozef [28 XI (10 XII) 1896, Stryi, Lviv region - 1943 or 1944, Oitsuv, Poland] - Polish composer, musicologist and teacher. In 1924 he graduated from the Vienna Conservatory with G. Adler, and studied composition with G. Gredener. In 1923 he wrote the first musicologist. the work "On orchestral color in the symphonic compositions of F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy" (berber orchestrale Coloristik in den symphonischen Werken von F. Mendelssohn-Bartoldy). In 1928-1939 he taught music theory and composition at the Lviv Conservatory at Polsk. musessociety (since 1939 named after N.V. Lysenko), in 1939-41 professor and vice-rector there. In 1930-37 ch. journal editor "Orkiestry" and "Echo" in Lviv. Permanent reviewer of muses. gas section. "Exspress wieczorny", author of a number of musical critic. articles.Ch. International Jury society sovr. music (1934). K. applied the dodecaphone method in his work. He wrote the cantata "Love", 4 symphonies, "Polish Suite", "Radyun Overture" for symphony. orc. (1941), "Handeliana" for symph. an orchestra (30 variations on the theme of Handel’s Passacalia), 15 variations for strings. orc., strings. trio (1929).
