SMETACHEK (Smetacek) Wenceslas (b. 30 IX 1906, Brno) - Czech conductor and oboe player. Nar art.Czechoslovakia (1976). He studied with L. Skugrovsky (oboe), with J. Krzychka (composition), P. Dedechek and M. Dolezhil (conducting) at the conservatory (1922-30) and with Z. Needla (musicology) at Charles University in Prague. He founded the Prague spirit. quintet (1928), participated in it as an oboe player, led it (1928-55). He was an oboe player in the Chesh Orchestra. Philharmonic Society (1930-33), conductor of the symphony. Radio Orchestra (1934-43), the choir "Verb Prague" (1934-46), Ch. conductor symph. Prague Orchestra (FOK; 1942-61). He taught oboe, taught classes of chamber ensemble (spirit. Instruments) and conducting at the Conservatory and the Academy of Arts (1945-1966) in Prague. He toured a lot (since 1938) in Europe, in a number of cities of the USSR (1961-63).
