KANKAROVICH Anatoly Isaakovich [26 IX (8 X) 1885, Petersburg - 17 VIII 1956, Washington] - Soviet conductor, composer and music. critic. He graduated from St. Petersburg. a conservatory in violin classes with L. S. Auer (1906), conducting with HH Cherepnin, compositions with I.I. Vitol (both - 1910; in 1906-07 he studied instrumentation with N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov). In 1910-14 he improved his skills as a conductor with A. Nikisch in Leipzig, V. Mengelberg in Amsterdam and E. Schuch in Dresden. Upon his return to USA (1915) he performed as a symph. and an opera conductor in Washington (Zimin Opera House, etc.), Petrograd (1918, the Mariinsky Theater, now the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater) and other cities. In 1920 the head. theatre. gas department. "Petrograd truth." Emissary Theater. and muses. departments of the People's Commissariat of Education. Author of the operas Son of the Earth (after G. Hoffmannsthal, 1915, Washington), Red Lighthouse, ballet Pan (after I. S. Turgenev,1918, Washington), manufact. for soloists, choir and orchestra; choirs a cappella; songs music for dramas. theater.
