PILARGE (Pilar) Karel (p. 30 X 1899, Stara Pak) - Czech. master of bow instruments. He studied under A. Chermak in the city of Kutna Hora (1913-16). He improved in Berlin, as well as in Prague (by O. Spidlen). Since 1924 he lives in the city of Hradec Kralove. Made tools on ital. models. Used light yellow, orange or red-brown varnishes. He gained fame as a restorer of ancient instruments. His students are many. Czech masters, including Ya. Zastava, I. Mikhalek, Ya. Ya. Gorak, and also daughter Vera P. (b. 29 II 1928). His son, Vladimir P. (b. 20 IV 1926, Hradec Kralove), who studied with his father, then under P. Spidlen in Prague, produces violins, violas and cello of chap. arr. based on models by A. Stradivarius (differ from them in curls). In the style of execution, its technically advanced tools are close to the work of Spidlen. The varnish is usually golden brown. Int.competition of violin masters to them. G. Wieniawski in Poznan in 1962 received the first prize for his violin. The son of Vladimir P. - Tomash P. (b. 1950) received the 2nd prize for violins at the Internat. competitions of violin masters named after A. Stradivarius in 1976 in Cremona (Italy) and them. G. Wieniawski in 1977 in Poznan (Poland).
