KILPINEN (Kilpinen) Irie (4 II 1892, Helsinki - 2 III 1959, ibid.) - Fin. composer and teacher. Since 1948 Finnish Academy. He studied music independently; for some time he studied in Vienna (1910-11), Berlin (1913-14). One of the classics fin. music, worked in the field of chamber lyric. songs (created by St. 600 productions., united mainly in cycles) to the texts of Finnish, Swedish, and German. poets. Despite some influence of him. schools (Ch. arr.X. Wolf), K.'s songs are distinguished by their originality, nat. coloring. The melodic freshness and expressiveness of recitation are combined in them with a figuratively developed batch of fp., Often of complex texture. The most famous vocal cycles are “On Love” (“Lieder der Liebe” op. 60, 61, 2 tetra, 1934) and “On Death” (“Lieder um den Tod” op. 62, 1934). In the late period of creativity K. turned to the chamber instr. production (6 sonatas for fp.,suite for viola da gamba, sonata for vlch. and fp., op. 90), wrote prod. for orc. (“Pastoral Suite” - “Pastoral suite” op. 82, 1943; “Dance of Death” - “Totentanz” op. 84, 1943). Since 1922 he led the ped. work in music. Academy named after J. Sibelius (formerly - Mus. Institute; professor), performed as music. critic.
