ZELENKA (Zelenka) Ladislav (11 III 1881, Modrzhani, near Prague - 2 VII 1957, Prague) - Czech. cellist and teacher. Nar art.Czechoslovakia (1947). He studied cello playing with J. Burian (1896-1902) at the Prague Conservatory and with H. Becker (1902-04) at the Frankfurt Conservatory. In 1904-11 he taught playing the cello at the Muses. School of Odessa Dep. RMO (among students - A. Strnad, A. Schuster, I. Malkin). At the same time he played in a quartet with A.P. Fidelman (he was successively replaced by Y. Kotsian and V.V. Bezekirsky), F. Stupka and J.P. Perman. He was a member of the quartet of O. Shevchik (1911–13), the “Czech Quartet” (1913–32; replaced G. Wigan in it), and later played in other ensembles. He became famous not only as a chamber musician, but also as a soloist who possessed express. tone, perfect technique, subtle sense of style. With the greatest success he performed the concerts of J. Haydn and A. Dvořák. Since 1922, professor of the chamber class, since 1928 - cello class at the Prague Conservatory,from 1936 - the School of Masters at this conservatory, in 1946-57 - the Academy of Arts. In 1946-48, rector of the Prague Conservatory. Among Z.'s students in Prague are K.P. Sadlo, V. Cerny, I. and S. Vechtomov, J. Szymandl.
