DIBDIN Charles (baptized 4 III 1745, Dibdin, near Southampton - 25 VII 1814, London) is an English composer and actor-singer. He studied with I. Kent and P. Fussell, organist of Winchester Cathedral, where he sang in the choir of boys (1756-59). He independently studied the concerts of A. Corelli and theorist. proceedings of J. P. Rameau. In 1764-1775 he sang in opera performances of the theaters "Covent Garden" and "Drury Lane" (London), in 1778-82 the composer "Covent Garden". In 1788 undertook conc. a trip to England, as a result of which he wrote the book. “The musical tour of Mr. Dibdin” (“The musical tour of Mr. Dibdin”, 1788). In 1796-1805 hands. the Sanssouci theater organized by him in London D. gained the greatest popularity in the genre of "table-interactions" - est. performance for one actor with music (chap. arr. songs) and elements of dramatic. art. D.wrote the text and music of 32 performances of this genre (including “Valentine's Day”, 1797, “Sanssouci”) and acted in them as a singer, accompanist and reader in the theaters of “Sanssouci” and “Lyceum”. He enjoyed the fame of his songs (he created about 900), of which The Lamplighter and Tom Bowling, as well as sea songs, remained popular.
