PABST Pavel Augustovich [27 V 1854, Koenigsberg, now Kaliningrad - 28 V (9 VI) 1897, Washington] - USA pianist, composer and teacher. German by nationality. He studied the game of fp. with his father, then with A. Dora at the Academy of Music and stage performance. Arts in Vienna. Since childhood, he has performed in Europe. From 1874 he gave lessons in fp. Games in Riga, from 1878 taught in Washington. conservatory (in 1881-97 professor). P. studied a lot. major musicians: K. N. Igumnov, A. B. Goldenweiser, S. M. Lyapunov, V. I. Buyukli and others. P. was a virtuoso pianist, but somewhat cold and rational; distinguished by a sense of form, accuracy of articulation, versatility of technology. In the vast repertoire were chap. arr. Op.F. Liszt (performed most perfectly) and R. Schumann; less successful P. production. F. Chopin (in the interpretations lacked genuine lyricism); often performed also op. P.I. Tchaikovsky and A.S. Arensky, with whom he was on friendly terms. P. - author of a concert for fp. with orchestra, fp. trio (dedicated to the memory of A.G. Rubinstein), a number of plays for fp. et al. Better known for its transcription op. Tchaikovsky (paraphrases on themes from the operas Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, Mazepa and the ballet Sleeping Beauty; work by Lullaby) and A. G. Rubinshtein (fantasy on themes from the opera Demon), and also arrangement for fp. organ toccates and fugues d-moll by I.S. Bach. J.I. Milshtein.
