PERI (Peri) Jacopo (nickname Long-haired - Zazzerino) (20 VIII 1561, Rome - 12 VIII 1633, Florence) - Italian singer and composer. Muses received education on hand. C. Malvezzi. From 1591 he served in the Florentine court of Medici ("chief director of music and musicians"). Member of the Florentine Camerata. P. - one of the creators of the opera as a new genre and monody with instr. comp. like a new style. In 1592 he composed the music (with J. Corsi) of the first opera - Daphne (to the text of the poet O. Rinuccini, post. 1597-98, Florence; fragments of P. were not preserved).
