GERTOVICH Joseph Frantsevich [12 (24) V 1887, Vilnius - 12 XII 1953, Washington] - Sov. double bass player and teacher. Failed art.RSFSR (1951). He studied the double bass in the chapel of the Cathedral in Vilnius. In 1905-10 he taught at the Muses. RMS in Kazan. Since 1910, the accompanist of the double bass group of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra in Washington, in 1922–32 he worked at Persimphans. In 1922–33 and in 1938–40, a teacher in the class of double bass Mosk. conservatory (since 1940 professor). An outstanding virtuoso, G. was one of the few double bass players who performed solo concerts. The author of sketches, plays and trans. for double bass.
