GALLENBERG (Gallenberg) Wenzel Robert (28 XII 1783, Vienna - 13 III 1839, Rome) - Austrian composer. He studied under I.G. Albrechtsberger in Vienna. In 1806, bandmaster and composer par. Theater in Naples. Collaborated with Italy. impresario D. Barbaya. In 1822-23 the director of the Viennese parish. troupe, from 1829 - “Kerntner-Theater” (parish opera in Vienna). In 1830-38 he lived in Italy and France, wrote ballets, in 1836-38 he was the director of the theater in Naples. G. - author approx. 50 ballets, including Alfred the Great (Alfred der Grosse, 1820), 3 orcs. overtures, pieces for harp, pl. fp production., 12 German. songs. G.'s ballets were popular in the 1830s; numerous themes have been written on themes from his music. Variations arrangements were made (C. Czerny, A. Diabelli), however, G.'s work was little original (the influence of V.A. Mozart, L. Cherubini). G. is mentioned in Beethoven’s biography as the husband of Juliet Gwichchardi,which composer dedicated. sonata for fp. op. 27 No 2 (the so-called "Lunar").
