The eighteen years I spent with Leonard Bernstein made up the backbone of this book, but the summer of 1971 in Tanglewood, when I watched and studied the work of Eugene Ormandi, Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson-Thomas, and Sir Colin Davis, had a big impact on what I wrote in the end. Leopold Stokowski, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Karl Böhm and Georg Scholti generously spent time and gave advice to the young conductor.
