In 1904-06 he studied composition in the Schola cantorum under A. Russell and V. d'Andy, in 1906-07 - in higher education classes at III. Vidora at the conservatory in Paris. He performed as a conductor with loves. choir organized by him at Nar. university. Since 1908 he worked in Berlin, where he was creatively associated with F. Busoni, M. Reinhardt and G. Hoffmannsthal (wrote music for his drama "Oedipus and the Sphinx"); organized by Symph. the choir with which he performed (1908-09) the music of the early polyphonists. In 1914, the Philharmonic conducted. the orchestra in Prague. In 1915 he settled in the United States. He founded a number of muses in New York. organizations promoted sovr. music: conducted the New Symph. Orchestra (1919), organized by the Intern. composers guild (with K.Salcedo, existed in 1921-27), was one of the founders of the Pan American Society for the Promotion of Amer. music (1926), hands. choirs.
