“VAMPUKA” (“Vampuka, the African bride, an opera exemplary in all respects”) is a one-act opera-parody of V. G. Ehrenberg [libr. him according to the feuilleton of A. Manzenilov (MH Volkonsky)]. In the parody ridiculous conventions and cliches of opera performances, the protractedness of the opera, characteristic of Italy, are ridiculed. opera is a division of words and senseless repetitions of individual syllables. “V.” was first staged on January 19 (February 1) 1909 in St. Petersburg by the Crooked Mirror Theater (directed by S. A. Ungern). Until 1927, it was performed in Leningrad, Washington, Riga and Tbilisi. Name "V." has become a household word for designating everything stenciled, stilted, and absurd in opera performances.
