AGNUS DEI (agnus dei, lat. - the lamb of God) - Catholic chant, the final section of the mass. Full text: Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis - “The Lamb of God, Thou who have taken away the sin of the world upon yourself, have mercy on us” (Christ is meant by the Lamb of God). The last words of the mass, usually adjacent to this text: Dona nobis pacem (“Give us peace”). AD is included in the memorial mass (requiem). Usually AD music is lyrically mournful. It is performed by a choir (Mozart's Requiem) or a choir with soloists (Beethoven's Solemn Mass), in other cases - one solo voice (viola aria in the h-moll mass of I. S. Bach). B. V. Levik.
