BRIDGETAUER (Bridgetower) George Augustus Polgreen (29 II 1780, Byala, Poland - 29 II 1860, London) - English violinist. Descendant of an African and a polka. He studied violin under the guidance of I. M. Yarnovich in Paris and F. I. Barthelemon in London. He made his debut in Paris in "Spiritual Concerts" (1789). He was a chamber virtuoso of the Prince of Wales. In 1802 he made a tour of European countries. B. Beethoven highly appreciated B.’s temperamental virtuoso play, writing under her impression the first 2 parts of the sonata for violin and piano. op. 47 (later dedicated to R. Kreutzer); the finale was written earlier and was intended by the composer for op. 30 No. 1 (as a final part). The Kreutzer Sonata was first performed by B. and L. Beethoven on a manuscript in Vienna on May 24, 1803.
