BLUTNER (Blüthner) Julius Ferdinand (11 III 1824, Falkenhayn, near Merseburg - 13 X 1910, Leipzig) - German. fp master, manufacturer. In 1853 he founded in Leipzig fp. a factory that soon gained world fame (the tools of the B. factory received the 1st ave. at the International Exhibition in Paris, 1867). He improved the design of the FP: he patented rehearsal mechanics in 1856, and the so-called in 1873 an aliquot system in which the sound fp. amplified complement. a set of resonant strings stretched above the playing strings and tuned in an octave to them. He wrote (jointly with X. Frechel) “Piano Textbook” (“Lehrbuch des Pianofortebaues”, Weimar, 1872, revised R. Hanneman, [Lpz.], 1924).
