BILLINGS (Billings) William (7 X 1746, Boston - 29 IX 1800, ibid.) - American composer. By profession a worker. He studied music on his own, in his youth he sang in a church. B. choirs - one of the first amers. composers, author of patriotic. songs and Puritan chorales, characterized by expressive power and originality in the use of polyphony. B. characterized his works as “fugged plays”. B. published in 1770 in Boston on Saturday. "The New England psalm singer, or American singer" ("The New England psalm singer ...").
