The last period of B.'s life and work is characterized by acute discord with surrounding reality, an increase in critical opposition sentiments. Along with the creation of monumental works of grand scale, such as the 9th symphony (with the final chorus to the words of the ode "To Joy" by Schiller) and the Solemn Mass, B.especially intensively worked in the field of chamber music. Recent sonatas for fp. (op. 101, 106, 109, 110 and 111) and quartets (op. 127, 130, 131, 132, 135) clearly reflect the evolution of B.'s style in later years.
