BERSTEIN (Bernstein) Leonard (p. 25 VIII 1918, Lawrence, PCs. Massachusetts) - American conductor, pianist and composer. He studied music at Harvard University under W. Piston and E.V. Hill (composition), X. Coates and G. Gebhard (fp.), In 1939-41 at the Muses. Curtis Institute (Philadelphia) with F. Reiner (conducting), R. Thompson (instrumentation), I.A. Vengerova (fp.). In 1942 he improved his skills with S. A. Kusevitsky in Tanglewood, was his assistant in the Berkshire muses. center. In 1943-1944, assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1945-49 chap. conductor of the New York City Center orchestra (successor to L. Stokowski). In 1957-1958 conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Orchestra, in 1958-69 Ch. conductor. In 1951-56 he taught conducting at the University of Brandys (near Boston). A versatile musician, B.is one of the largest modern conductors, a talented pianist and composer. As a conductor belongs to the romantic artists. directions; has a pronounced creative. individuality: elemental temperament, the desire for colorfulness, visualization and dynamism are combined in B. with the depth and breadth of the interpretive concept.
