In today's large symphony orchestras, one can hardly imagine a conductor who would appear with a violin under his arm or sit at a harpsichord. But when performing old music, this is still practiced, for example, when a violinist plays a concert by Bach or Vivaldi and at the same time directs the orchestra accompanying his performance. This is quite possible, since in this case we are talking, as a rule, about a small chamber orchestra. I have been working with such ensembles without a conductor for many years and enjoy the freedom associated with this.
