Schicaneder’s poems were really clumsy, but Beethoven was affected by the situation outlined in the opening scene of The Flames of Vesta. The opera opened with an exciting scene. Sartagon and Volivia dearly bid farewell after a secret meeting, and Porus who watched them emanated angrily, intending to renounce his daughter, who dared to love the enemy of their family. Taken by surprise, the lovers so movingly defended their loyalty to each other that Porus gradually softened and, being a generous man, agreed to betrothe Volivia to Sartagon.
